Texas Wildlife Association Foundation to host San Angelo Gala

The Texas Wildlife Association Foundation (TWAF) is planning to recognize the inaugural San Angelo Area 2024 Conservationist of the Year during an August gala event.

The statewide wildlife and conservation organization will honor the Virgil James Powell families including the James L. Powell family, the Madolyn Powell Mertz family and the Marolyn Powell Bean family at the event slated for 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 15 at Bentwood Country Club.

“The Powell, Mertz and Bean families have ranched in West Texas for over 100 years and in doing so have exemplified conservation and land stewardship for the livestock and wildlife that call their pastures home,” said TWAF President Alan Curry.

“We encourage our friends in the San Angelo region to attend our gala to support these families and the new educational initiatives that TWAF will have in area schools beginning this fall,” he said.

Greg Simons, TWAF trustee, notes that the event will help fund the San Angelo Area Conservation Education Initiative, where a full-time conservation education specialist will principally focus on working with San Angelo area schools to educate students about the importance of our Texas natural resources and the integral role that private land stewardship plays in the sustainable health of those resources. A secondary part of this education outreach will include adult education that is built around stewardship concepts related to land, water, and wildlife.

According to Simons, “Conservation of our natural resources and preserving important local cultures are among the greatest challenges facing societies – globally, nationally and right here in our back yard. Addressing these challenges, effectively, must fundamentally begin through education.” He also added, “We look forward to applying a proven and highly successful education model that Texas Wildlife Association has been deploying in other areas of Texas and fine-tuning those efforts to uniquely fit the people and communities of our San Angelo area.”
