Explore the basics of the water cycle and discover groundwater found in aquifers, the underground rock formations that create our spring-fed ecosystems.

Water is a basic need of all living things and is a renewable resource that exists in many stages within the water cycle. A lot of the world’s freshwater is groundwater, found underground in rock formations called aquifers. The porous rocks of an aquifer, such as sandstone and limestone, are composed of small holes or pores through which water flows. Groundwater follows a different path in the water cycle than surface water.
