Explore the basic needs, life cycle, adaptations, and migration patterns of the Texas state insect, the monarch butterfly, and discover how you can help conserve this unique creature.

Butterflies are in the Lepidoptera, scaly-wing, family because their wings are covered with thousands of tiny scales arranged in colorful designs unique to each species. The monarch butterfly, in particular, has bright colors that act as a warning to predators. Because monarch butterflies feed on the milky sap of the milkweed plant as caterpillars, they are poisonous, even as adults.
