Discover how wetland ecosystems, such as swamps and marshes, are important to the water cycle and provide habitat for a great diversity of wildlife.

Swamps and marshes are known as wetlands and have different characteristics than other bodies of waters, such as lakes. Wetlands are defined as an area of land that is covered with water with water-tolerant plants, like grasses and trees, growing out of the water. Wetlands can be made of freshwater or saltwater depending on where the water originates. Wetlands are common in east Texas and along the coastline of the Gulf of Mexico.
